Cargo Insurance

Standard carrier liability covers only a fraction of your cargo’s commercial value. We arrange tailored cargo insurance for sea, air, and land freight, and manage claims on your behalf when needed.

Overview

Why Choose Us?

Transam offers supply chain solutions that connect people, products, and places. By integrating sea and airfreight services with trucking, customs brokerage, warehousing, documentation, and more, we deliver seamless and custom-tailored end-to-end logistics.

Tailored Cover

Not all cargo is the same, and neither is the risk. We match your insurance cover to the nature of your goods, the route, and the mode, so you’re not over-insured or exposed.

Reduced Exposure

Cargo loss or damage can be financially significant. The right policy limits your exposure and ensures you can recover quickly without bearing the full cost of an incident.

Greater Confidence

Knowing your cargo is properly insured means you can make freight decisions based on the right logistics factors, not on fear of what might happen.

Insurance Services

We provide independent insurance advisory and claims management, so you get the right policy, and the right support when you need to use it.

Advisory & Consultation

We review your cargo type, value, route, and risk profile and recommend the most appropriate cover. We work with a range of underwriters to find a policy that genuinely fits your needs.

Claims Management

If the worst happens, we can manage your claim from lodgement to resolution, liaising with insurers, gathering documentation, and advocating for a fair and prompt outcome on your behalf.

Types of

Cover

We work with all standard forms of marine cargo insurance, matched to the risk profile of your shipment.

All-Risk Marine Cargo Insurance

01

The broadest available cover, protects against all physical loss or damage to cargo from any external cause, subject to standard exclusions. Recommended for high-value or vulnerable cargo.

Named Perils Insurance

02

Cover limited to specific listed risks, such as fire, sinking, collision, or overturning. More economical than all-risk, but it’s important to understand exactly what is and isn’t covered.

Liability Insurance

03

Covers third-party liability arising from cargo incidents, relevant for freight operators, 3PL providers, and logistics businesses that handle other parties’ goods.

Project Cargo Insurance

04

Specialist insurance for high-value, one-off, or oversized cargo movements, such as industrial plant, infrastructure components, and heavy machinery. Underwritten specifically for the project, route, and risk involved.

FAQs

01

Does my cargo need insurance?

Cargo insurance is not legally required, but it is strongly recommended. Carriers’ liability under international conventions (such as the Hague-Visby Rules) is limited, and in many cases won’t cover the full value of your goods if they’re lost or damaged. If your cargo has any significant value, the cost of insurance is almost always justified by the exposure it removes.

02

What does marine cargo insurance cover?

Even well-managed shipments can encounter the unexpected. Marine cargo insurance covers physical loss or damage to goods during transit by sea, air, or land – wherever your freight moves. The scope of cover depends on the policy type, all-risk policies cover any external cause of loss, while named perils policies cover only the specific risks listed. Standard exclusions typically include inherent vice (deterioration from the goods’ own nature), improper packing, and deliberate damage. We’ll explain exactly what your policy covers before you commit.

03

What is the difference between all-risk and named perils cargo insurance?

All-risk cover protects against any physical loss or damage from an external cause, making it the broadest and most comprehensive option. Named perils cover only responds to the specific events listed in the policy, such as fire, flood, theft, or vessel sinking. Named perils is typically cheaper, but leaves gaps that all-risk would cover. For most commercial cargo with meaningful value, we recommend starting with an all-risk assessment.

04

How do I make a cargo insurance claim with Transam?

If your cargo is lost or damaged, notify us as soon as possible. We’ll guide you through the process, documenting the damage, obtaining the required survey reports, potentially lodging the claim with the insurer, and following up through to settlement. Having us support to manage the claim means you deal with one contact rather than navigating insurer correspondence on your own.
