FAQs

01

What does a customs broker actually do?

A customs broker acts as your agent with customs authorities. We prepare and lodge the documentation required to import or export goods, calculate duties and taxes, apply for any permits or concessions, and manage any queries or examinations from customs. Think of us as the people who stand between you and a very complicated bureaucratic process.

02

How are import duties calculated?

Duties are calculated based on the tariff classification of your goods, the customs value (generally the transaction price plus freight and insurance), and any applicable duty rate. Some goods also attract excise or anti-dumping duties. Rates vary by country and commodity – we’ll walk you through what applies to your specific products and destination market.

03

Can you help if my goods have already been held at the border?

Yes. If your cargo is under examination or you’ve received a customs query, contact us as soon as possible. We can work through the issue, provide supporting documentation, and liaise with customs authorities on your behalf.

04

Do you handle both seafreight and airfreight customs?

Yes, we clear cargo arriving by sea, air, and courier. The documentation requirements differ, but the expertise is the same.

05

What information do I need to provide for a customs entry?

At minimum: a commercial invoice (including country of manufacture), packing list, and bill of lading or air waybill. Depending on the goods and the market, you may also need certificates of origin, permits, or manufacturer’s declarations. We’ll tell you exactly what’s needed for your specific shipment.

06

How long does customs clearance take?

It varies by country, commodity, and how complete your documentation is. In straightforward cases with accurate paperwork, clearance can happen within hours of arrival. More complex shipments – or those requiring inspection, permits, or treatment – may take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline based on your specific cargo and destination.
